John Skurla turns 90 May 13th! So I am writing this blog to honor my dad and the legacy he created for me, the Skurla's family, and his family and network of friends and business associates.
After serving in the Air Force, John started selling cash registers for NCR in Alaska in the late 50's. He traveled all over the state - selling registers and sharing his stories.
Working with NCR, he got transferred to Hawaii, Seattle, Missouri and Kansas. But his heart remained in Alaska. (I remember growing up, my dad would always tell me - Alaska is God's country!)
So we packed up and headed back home. After a brief stint working for Yukon Office Supply, my dad decided it was time to start his own company, along with his wife (my mom!) Phyllis. In 1976, they started Skurla's Cash Register Co. in the basement of their home in Turnagain. Eventually they opened an office on Spenard Road, expanded and had to move to a larger location on the same road. When he retired in 2004, they were located in the Professional Building on Northern Lights Blvd. In addition to the company, they were also staunch supporters and members of the ICRDA (International Cash Register Dealers Association), now RSPA (Retail Solutions Providers Association). They took many wonderful trips with the association, and it was a great place for John to share even more stories!
My sisters (Gail and Karen) and I all took turns working in the business at various points of time. And while their lives took different directions, I always came back to work in this business that my parents loved and nurtured. I am so grateful to both of them for the opportunities they have given me.
So Happy Birthday, Dad! From all of us in the Skurla's family!
I know that my dad would love to hear from those that he worked with over the years.
