Critical Message on Upgrading to iOS 11

By Lynn Skurla Perkins | Dec 4, 2017 10:30:15 AM
Here is an important update from the team at MobileBytes:

MB POS 3.11 is now available for download on the App Store. Any merchants currently running iOS 11.2 should update to this version. Additionally any merchants planning to update to iOS version 11.2 should be sure to update to MB POS version 3.11 prior to performing the iOS update.

This is critical, as there is an issue with iOS 11.2 and the POS won't run.

Striving for Better Communications - With Our New Phone System!

By Thomas Greenman | Nov 29, 2017 4:41:37 PM

Like most businesses, we are constantly looking for ways to improve. We have a flyer we have pinned up on the walls here that lists some of the key points we are looking to focus on for the year and one of these is: “Better communications with our customers.”

As a technology provider, our phones are our life line to just about everything we do, whether it be assisting customers, working with vendors or communicating internally. We decided that it was time to invest in a new phone system, and we reached out to GCI for assistance in getting there.

Starting this month, our new CISCO 8800 series IP phones will be changing the way you hear from us. This new system features:

Mastercard Says "No More Signing on the Dotted Line"

By Lynn Skurla Perkins | Oct 26, 2017 8:21:16 AM

I just read an article by Linda Kirkpatrick - Executive Vice President, U.S. Market Development at Mastercard - "No More Signing on the Dotted Line".

According to the article, Mastercard  will no longer re quire signatures at checkout for any credit or debit purchases in Canada and the U.S. starting April 2018.  Right now the card brands (VISA, Mastercard , Discover, American Express) have thresholds for transactions that don't require a signature, typically  $50.  But starting next April, Mastercard won't require a signature for any retail transactions at checkout.  I imagine that the other card brands will follow suit at some point.

Still Hold Off on Upgrading to iOS 11

By Lynn Skurla Perkins | Oct 19, 2017 8:13:55 AM
As of 10/19/17 from MobileBytes:

"As of today, 31% of our installed iPads are running iOS 11. We are aware of a very rare 'edge case' crash when running MB POS with iOS 11 and are working on a patch for a future release.

Keep in mind there is no benefit to merchants for running iOS 11 vs iOS 10. Resellers should not feel compelled to upgrade existing iPads to iOS 11. Newly purchased iPads that come pre-installed are fine to run in sites where iOS 10 is installed on other iPads. "

Eye Opening Article - Anatomy of a Data Breach

By Lynn Skurla Perkins | Oct 4, 2017 1:47:52 PM

Data breach - those two words can (and should) scare the heck out of business owners.  It is everywhere in the news.  I think on some level, people are just throwing their hands up in the air at this point.  However, we don't want our customers to go through this experience - no one wants the CIA showing up at their back door or having their funds frozen because of a suspected breach.

To help you understand the impacts, we wanted to share this article by Justin Zeigler, the director of product development and marketing at Datacap Systems.  (Datacap Systems develops integrated payment interfaces for any type Point of Sale Application - so they are very in tune with security for point of sale systems.)  In this article, he discusses:

As a business owner, it is vital to understand the effects of a breach on your business, your customers and your employees.

This Loyalty Program is Genius - and Easy to Use

By Lynn Skurla Perkins | Sep 28, 2017 10:48:03 AM

You know you need to implement a loyalty program in your restaurant - but never got around to it for many reasons - not enough time, where do I begin, how do I market it, etc.

Research shows that consumers want and will use loyalty programs - and if done right, a loyalty program will bring your customer back to your restaurant.

Programs needs to be easy to use and engage your customer.  No one wants to carry around a plastic card anymore.  And to be honest, no one really wants to spend the time to give their server or cashier their information to enter their loyalty points.

So this is why I think the MobileBytes Loyalty Program is genius - it's called Scan for Points - customers simply scan the receipt with their phones.  Boom! Points collected.  And the program is free - yes, free - included with your MobileBytes system.

What the Future Holds for Restaurants and Retail

By Thomas Greenman | Aug 29, 2017 3:52:58 PM

Our world is changing, quicker than some of us would like and for others, not quick enough.  All this change affects restaurants and retail like no other because your customers are on the forefront of these changes.  As your trusted Point of Sale (POS) provider, we find ourselves changing too.  We can’t just be a company that provides for you today, we also have to be able to provide for your future.  To help us do this, Skurla’s has been a member of RSPA (Retail Solutions Providers Association) for the better part of 40 years.  RSPA isn’t just for retail though.  At its heart are hundreds of POS providers and vendors, working together for a common cause: to help you.

Every year, RSPA members, vendors and partners meet at an event called RetailNOW.  I was fortunate to be able to attend and see what the future holds for restaurants and retail.  There were too many things to cover here but there were a few that stood out as key areas for merchants to take note of.

Customer engagement was one of the most popular areas that other POS dealers such as us were interested in.  A lot of this revolved around things like customer loyalty, data analytics (using it) and mobility.  These three things are fast becoming inseparable to the modern merchant.  They don’t have to exist together but when they do, it’s a big win for the customer and the merchant.

  • Customer loyalty is a system that rewards the customer for coming back to a merchant and giving them repeat business. It’s usually offered up in the way of points that are redeemed for good and/or services.  The big change here is making it as easy as possible for not only the customers to participate but having the merchants staff understand the process and help the customers engage.  Your staff are the “face” of the business and if they are engaged in the process, they will sell it like no other.  But to make it easy, you need to make another change: mobility.
  • Mobility is a two-way street and your customers are already experts. If you don’t have the right mobility options to engage them, you’re falling behind.  New POS options have beacon technology, which enable merchants to know who is in the store or if they are close.  Utilizing this, smart merchants can know what a particular customer likes and market or sell to them direct and the customer will cheer you on for it!  But in-depth knowledge of your customer preferences takes more than just data.
  • Data analytics isn’t enough – utilizing it is key. There are plenty of companies out there who will gather data for you but what do you do with it?  Using that data in a meaningful way is the third piece of customer engagement.  Have you ever been to a store or restaurant and filled out a comment card and never received a follow up call or email?  Or maybe not seen the changes that you would have expected?  Sadly, customers see this all too often and the result is that they don’t patronize that merchant again or are dissatisfied and share their experiences with other potential or existing customers.  Having tools and systems in place to act on your data will help you better serve your customers and turn them into raving fans.

Introducing Scan-to-Pay, Mobile Payment for Table Service Restaurants

By Lynn Skurla Perkins | Aug 22, 2017 9:01:41 AM

Introducing Scan-to-Pay, Mobile Payment for Table Service Restaurants

MobileBytes is launching a new mobile payment option for table service restaurants called Scan-to-Pay.

The experience

Imagine with me for a moment that you arrive at a restaurant with your phone in your pocket. iBeacon technology alerts the POS system that you’ve arrived and displays your guest information to the restaurant host.

The host taps your picture when you walk in the door and adds you to the waitlist with the touch of a button. Instead of being handed a large pager, you’re greeted by name and told your table will be ready shortly.

Without having to give the restaurant your phone number, you receive a text message when your table is ready. When the server comes to your table, they know your name, and your previous order history. “Would you like the Santa Fe Burger with no onions again today, or are you in the mood for something new?”

With the touch of a button, your favorite menu items are added to the check and customized just the way you like them.

Finally, when your server drops off your check, you don’t have to hand over your credit card or wait to pay your bill. You simply use your phone to scan the QR code printed on the bottom of your meal ticket, enter the amount you want to tip and pay the bill through your phone. The entire payment process takes less than 10-seconds and you are on your way out the door to enjoy the rest of your day.

This is not a futuristic restaurant experience. It’s Scan-to-Pay and it’s available to implement at your restaurant today.

The details

Scan-to-Pay is designed to help your restaurant turn tables faster while providing an improved and personalized customer experience.

At participating restaurants, Scan-to-Pay is even able to connect with your MobileBytes loyalty program. This gives guests the opportunity to automatically earn rewards after enough points have been accrued without having to enter separate information.

Once the guest has paid, the restaurant and server are immediately notified through their MobileBytes POS system.

Scan-to-Pay does not store your customer’s credit card data. Instead, encrypted tokens are used to make guests’ card data secure. This allows a guest to reuse their credit card for future transactions without needing to re-enter their card number.

The best part about Scan-to-Pay? It is included in MobileBytes powerful suite of features at no additional cost. Which means restaurants receive all of the benefits of mobile payment without the added cost of a third party mobile payments provider.

Advanced Check Splitting in MobileBytes

By Lynn Skurla Perkins | Jun 6, 2017 2:54:33 PM

Using and Understanding the new Advanced Check Splitting feature MobileBytes (Please note this feature is only supported in MB POS version 3.0 and above):

Advanced Check Splitting

  • Advanced Split Option - New option under the order entry split screen allows splitting items into uneven fractions. Items can be split among any number of splits in 1/3s, 1/4s, 1/5s, and so on, so one check may have ⅕ and another two checks may each have ⅖. Watch.
  • Move/Unsplit To - The default option allows the user to rapidly move items between splits without needing to first split the item. It is also a quick way to undo split items by Unsplitting them to a single check. Watch. The existing even split functionality is moved under the ‘Evenly’ option. Watch.
  • ‘All’ button - The All split tab is now pinned so that the user can always get quick access to the high-level main check without needing to scroll.
  • Splitting from the All Check - All of the new advanced splitting and item moving can be done from the All check, without needing to navigate to each split first. Many add/new split functions automatically put you on the All check and on the Split screen.
  • Split Navigation - Users can now select each of the Check headers on the All check itself which links immediately to the selected check.
  • Split Statuses - Once any of the checks are paid, all of the check tabs and check headers on the All check begin reflecting their Paid/Unpaid status to help the user find ones that still need payment and ignore the others. Paid checks are also moved to the end of the list to help this process. Watch.

Implementing EMV is Simple with MobileBytes

By Lynn Skurla Perkins | May 15, 2017 3:33:44 PM

If you are in the restaurant industry, you may have heard the war stories about implementing EMV in the U.S.  As you go through your mental list of places you shop and dine - how many actually have the new CHIP readers integrated into their point of sale system? And of those that do - how many actually work? Lots of places have them, but the CHIP reader is still not available for use.

In the Point of Sale world, mass confusion abounds. In my experience as the CEO of Skurla’s POS Solutions, many of the major Point of Sale providers STILL don't have an EMV solution that works. Or maybe they have a solution that works for some kinds of payment types, but not others.

For a while, it seemed that we were uninstalling and reinstalling more EMV solutions than we had successfully installed. Hundreds of man hours have been wasted on trying to get solutions working - and some still don't work! Our customers were frustrated, and we were pulling our hair out.

MobileBytes Introduces - New Online Ordering Features

By Lynn Skurla Perkins | Apr 28, 2017 5:42:07 PM

New Online Ordering Features that MobileBytesCustomers Have Been Requesting!

  • Online menu schedule overrides - Restaurants can now set up online menu schedule overrides for specific dates. Schedule overrides are set up the same way as the standard online menu schedules, attaching a menu group or no group to a time period. Adding an override schedule for a date will completely override the normal online ordering hours for that day.
  • Tipping - Users can now add a tip to their order before submitting. If the restaurant is using Sale & Adjust for online transactions, two new options will appear on the Online Ordering setup page: “Carryout Tips Allowed” and “Delivery Tips Allowed.” Enabling either of these options will show tip options to the online ordering user during the checkout process, using the tip defaults from the assigned room if they are set.
  • Pricing overrides - Online ordering now respects pricing override schedules and rules. Rules can be scheduled to take effect on a specific day/time, in a specific date range, or only in specific rooms. Rules are applied by sort order, so if there are overlapping rules, the first in the list will get applied first. Scheduled rules will only take effect if the user’s pickup/delivery time (minus the order type’s lead time) and the time the user is placing the order (meaning the user’s browser time) are both within the timeframe for a scheduled rule, essentially preventing users from getting scheduled pricing on future orders. Users will be able to see the rule applied to an item/size if a Short Identifier is present on the rule, otherwise, the rule be applied discretely, which is the same behavior as the POS.
  • Auto apply adjustments - Auto apply ticket adjustments with a party size rule of either 0 or 1 are now applied to online orders during checkout. If the adjustment is set as room specific, it will only apply to the order if it is set up in a room associated with the order’s type (ie Carryout/Delivery).
  • Item stock - Online ordering now respects item stock quantities. Items that are out of stock are disabled and cannot be clicked or added. Items with limited quantity say so, and the number that can be added to the cart is limited to that number. Ingredients attached to subitems with stock limits will also affect the availability of the parent item.
  • Payment type added to confirmation emails - Payment type has been added to the online order confirmation emails. It will display as either “Pay in person” if the payment type is pay in person or “Paid online” if the payment type is a new card or a saved payment method.
  • Online ordering experience feedback - Online ordering experience feedback is being collected on submitted orders. Once an order has been submitted, the user will see an option to rate their online ordering experience. They can choose between 1 and 5 stars and add an optional comment. If no stars are selected, the feedback cannot be submitted. General online ordering feedback can now be submitted as well. The page footer has been redesigned to include a link that says “Give us Feedback.” Clicking this will present a text entry form for the user to send us general feedback or issues at any point during the ordering process. User feedback is specifically for the MobileBytes team to gather data to help us improve online ordering as much as possible. There is no report for our merchants to see this data.

Emergency Supply Kits - Be a Hero!

By Lynn Skurla Perkins | Apr 27, 2017 11:23:42 AM

It's Friday night - your store or restaurant is packed.  Things are humming along nicely and you're thinking - we are busy, life is good!

Then you get the call - we are out of receipt paper at the register - can you bring us a roll?

You look, you panic - oh man - you forgot to reorder last week after they used that last roll!!!!

But you, being a smart manager/owner - know that you have that emergency supply kit tucked away for times just like these!  Viola!  Crack open the kit, and all is good.

Ok, but for those of you that don't have that emergency supply kit, well.....

So here is our advice.  First of all, make your point of sale supplies stock is something you inventory and check stock of on a regular basis.  If you purchase your supplies from us, we can even get you accurate sales history of how much you go through on a regular basis.  Preorder for a couple of months or even a season and take advantage of our quantity discounts!

But the unexpected can still happen.  So, for that reason, we suggest you create an emergency point of sale supply kit that only you or your managers know about and have access to.  Make this a part of your disaster plan!

Here are some suggestions of what to keep in that kit:

Pay at the Table and EMV - What Does it Mean for your Restaurant?

By Lynn Skurla Perkins | Apr 19, 2017 9:29:00 AM

We frequently get asked about the future of Pay at the Table - and why it hasn't been widely adopted in Alaska (and the rest of the U.S.).  For our MobileBytes customers, Pay at the Table and EMV are available now!

Here is an article from Hospitality Technology from June 2016:

"In an EMV world, it’s best practice for cards to never leave the customer’s possession during a transaction. In the U.S., an additional driver for bringing payment to the table is mobile payment solutions such as Apple Pay, which require either a fingerprint ID or PIN. The payment method can’t come to the POS – customers aren’t going to turn over their PIN or smartphone – so the POS has to come to the customer.
There are multiple benefits for implementing tableside payment at restaurants. Not only does bringing the point of sale to the customer help to boost table turns and revenue, it also helps to protect customer cardholder data, which is a major concern for merchants. Here, Greg Burch, vice president of strategic initiatives U.S. for Ingenico Group, highlights some of the perks and breaks down a few best practices.
Paybacks from tableside payment
Higher table turns. Consider a typical payment transaction with a magnetic stripe card: a server drops a check at the table in a billfold, and leaves. The customer retrieves their card and leaves it in the billfold, then waits for the server to return. Sometimes that happens a minute later, and sometimes it’s 10 or more minutes later.  Then the customer waits again for their receipt. Most restaurants measure table turns closely, and even small increases can contribute to profitability. Moving from three to four table turns per shift can increase revenue by 20-25 percent.
Less waiting for customers, higher tips for servers. Cutting down that wait time by bringing the payment device to the table not only leads to more table turns and increased face-time, but also higher customer satisfaction. The result is better tips for servers. We witnessed this firsthand in Canada, where Pay-at-the-Table became the standard shortly after that country’s EMV migration in 2010.
Reduced chargebacks. Businesses that do not upgrade their payment technology to accept EMV chip cards are putting themselves at risk of chargebacks due to credit card fraud. Major acquirers have reported that chargebacks have been on the rise since the October 2015 liability shift, with restaurants being one of the major areas affected. This is essentially a trickle-down effect: as more merchants move to EMV, fraud moves to areas that have been slower adopters. Even a small increase in chargebacks and card fraud can be potentially devastating to a small business.
Reductions in identity theft. Card skimming by servers has been known to occur in the hospitality industry, where cards typically leave consumers’ sight for several minutes. Servers who are part of fraud rings can wear discreet card skimmers on their belt loops and collect card data from hundreds of customers in a week. Five hundred skimmed cards can be sold on the black market for $1500 or more – significantly boosting a server’s annual income. Pay-at-the-table eliminates that possibility by keeping cards out of servers’ possession.
